Copper pipe and fitting exports from China declined to 322K tons in 2023, which is down by -8.2% compared with the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 354K tons. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, copper pipe and fitting exports shrank notably to $3.4B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports, however, saw a moderate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 64%. The exports peaked at $4B in 2022, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
Thailand (38K tons), the United States (23K tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (21K tons) were the main destinations of copper pipe and fitting exports from China, with a combined 25% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +7.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for copper pipe and fitting exported from China were Thailand ($364M), the United States ($297M) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($192M), together accounting for 25% of total exports. Japan, Australia, Russia, Malaysia and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
Russia, with a CAGR of +9.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tubes and pipes of refined copper (202K tons) was the largest type of copper tubes, pipes and fitting exported from China, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, tubes and pipes of refined copper exceeded the volume of the second product type, tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of copper alloys (87K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of refined copper (15K tons), with a 4.6% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of tubes and pipes of refined copper exports totaled +3.9%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of copper alloys (+1.5% per year) and tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of refined copper (+4.3% per year).
In value terms, copper tubes, pipes and fitting with the largest exports in China were tubes and pipes of refined copper ($2B), tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of copper alloys ($983M) and tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of refined copper ($221M), with a combined 94% share of total exports.

In 2023, the copper pipe and fitting price stood at $10,430 per ton (FOB, China), reducing by -7.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $11,277 per ton in 2022, and then declined in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($13,158 per ton) and Japan ($12,106 per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($9,337 per ton) and Indonesia ($9,461 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
