May 19, 2023DPS board approves high school roofing bid
A new roof, teachers and a principal topped the Duncan Board of Education's agenda during a special meeting on Monday night.
In a previous May board meeting, Construction Manager At-Risk (CMAR) Ken Shaw, with Hope Equipment and Construction, addressed the board about receiving bids on the Duncan High School roofing project as part of the DPS 2020 Vision Bond Projects.
On Monday, May 22, Shaw reconfirmed the four bidders as Cantrell Exterior Finishes, LLC, Duncan Total Roofing, Crawford Roofing, Inc. and Ford Roofing and Sheet Metal Co.
"The low bid at the high school was Cantrell Exterior Finishes, LLC at $349,000 with 60 days to complete the project, " he said. "Second bid was Duncan Total Roofing at $452,000."
Duncan Total Roofing had a project completion of 70 days.
The remaining two bids were from Crawford Roofing, Inc., at $510,396 with 45 days for completion and Ford Roofing and Sheet Metal Co. at $564,000 and 120 days completion.
Shaw said Cantrell Exterior Finishes, LLC has just started on Mark Twain Elementary as well. He recommended Cantrell Exterior Finishes, LLC. for the project.
The board approved to award Cantrell Exterior Finishes, LLC for roofing at Duncan High School for $349,000 with a 4-0 vote.
Next, board members opened discussion for an encumbrance to Summit Utilities for additional district natural gas utilities for $115,814.48.
Superintendent Dr. Channa Byerly said this is in addition to their original purchase order.
Byerly said after the switch from Centerpoint to Summit Utilities, they received their first invoice in March. She said she requested a breakdown of the totals.
According to Byerly, it took a while to get the breakdown for the increase in cost and the reason for the increase of billing.
Byerly said the $115,814.48 is the additional amount they owe.
"We still haven't received May or June," she said.
Byerly said the total amount is from July to present.
She also said they have three different accounts, which is why they requested the breakdown, because the numbers weren't adding up.
According to Byerly, the bills should be sent monthly from this point forward.
"There was only one building that looked like we had used more and we’re still looking to see how much more, because again it goes back to that one bill that groups a lot of them together," she said. "Everything else was pretty close to the same, it's just the increase in the prices are so much more now."
The board approved to pay an encumbrance to Summit Utilities for additional district natural gas utilities for $115,814.48 paid from the building fund with a 4-0 vote.
In other news, the board approved:
• Schedule A, which included: a physical education teacher, Delydia Givens; a head girls basketball coach, Grant Givens; a teacher, Freeland Hise; and a Horace Mann Elementary Principal, Stephanie Wall.
The next regular meeting of the Board of Education will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 20 at the Administration Building, located at 1706 W. Spruce in Duncan.
